The short answer

Most people looking for a hook up app want the same things: something quick to use, something discreet on a phone that other people may glance at, and something that does not surprise them with a bill. This guide is for adults aged 18 and over in the UK. It explains how hookup apps differ from websites, how app store subscriptions work, and how to keep your notifications and data private. Updated October 2026.

We compare five services that UK readers can use: BeNaughty, FriendsWithBenefits, NaughtyCharm, OneNightFriend and Shag. The ranking panel shows the current order. If you click through from this site we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you, and it does not change our assessment. Where we could not confirm whether a service has a dedicated app, we say so.

Hookup apps versus hookup websites

The phrase apps for hooking up covers two different things. Some services are mainly mobile apps downloaded from an app store. Others are websites that also work on a phone, sometimes with an app alongside. The difference affects how you pay, how you cancel and what appears on your screen.

QuestionAppWebsite
Speed of useUsually quicker, with push notificationsSlower to open, but fewer interruptions
Where you payOften through the app store, sometimes in the app itselfUsually by card or another payment method on the site
Where you cancelIn the app store subscription settings if you paid thereIn your account settings on the site
Privacy on your phoneIcon on the home screen and notifications on the lock screenNo icon, but browser history and saved logins
Detail in profilesOften shorter and more visualOften more room for text and filters

Neither is better for everyone. If you want to compare websites in more depth, our guide to hookup sites covers them. For the general difference between categories, see hookup apps versus dating apps.

The five services we compare

The table lists each service alphabetically. The taglines, age ranges and member totals are the figures held in our content system, which come from the platforms. We cannot independently verify them. The final column shows whether the platform lists mobile support in our content system. A not confirmed entry does not mean there is no app, only that we have no verified detail.

ServiceTagline according to the platformAge range statedMember total statedMobile listed
BeNaughtyFor fun adventures20-45About 1 millionYes, according to the platform
FriendsWithBenefitsCasual dating for adults, no strings attached20+About 2.5 millionNot confirmed

For a closer look at each one, read the reviews of BeNaughty, FriendsWithBenefits, NaughtyCharm, OneNightFriend and Shag. Each explains what we could and could not confirm without an account.

What about Tinder, Bumble, Hinge and other general apps?

Mainstream dating apps such as Tinder, Bumble and Hinge are not among the services we compare, and they are not built specifically for casual encounters. Generally, they offer a free basic version with paid upgrades, and their terms change from time to time. Some people use them for casual dating, others prefer a service where everyone states their intentions openly. We cover the trade-offs in is Tinder good for casual dating?

App store subscriptions: how they work

If you pay for an app through the Apple App Store or Google Play, the subscription belongs to your store account, not to the app itself. That has practical consequences.

  • Cancel in the store. Deleting the app does not cancel the subscription. Turn off renewal in your store account subscription settings.
  • Cancel before the renewal date. Renewal usually happens shortly before the end of the billing period, so do not wait until the last day.
  • Billing appears under the store. Your statement may show the app store rather than the service name, which some people find more discreet.
  • Refunds follow the store's process. Whether you can get one depends on the store's rules and your consumer rights, not just the service.

For the billing questions we hear most, see our guides on BeNaughty cost and cancellation and FriendsWithBenefits cost and cancellation. In the UK, online subscriptions often renew automatically, and consumer rights for digital services have their own rules. If a problem cannot be resolved, Citizens Advice and Trading Standards are the places to start.

Is a hookup app free?

Downloading an app is usually free. Using it fully often is not. Typical pattern: a free basic profile, limited browsing or messaging, and paid upgrades. Some services describe themselves as free to join, which is not the same as free to use. We could not confirm current prices for these services without accounts, so we do not quote any. What matters is the length of the plan, whether it renews automatically, whether you buy credits, any introductory offer and the payment channel. Our guide to are hookup sites free? goes through the pattern in more detail, and free hookup sites looks at the idea of free more broadly.

Notification privacy on your phone

An app that sends alerts to your lock screen can reveal more than you intend. A few small settings make a large difference.

SettingWhat to do
Lock screen notificationsTurn off previews, or switch notifications off for the app entirely
App name and iconConsider moving the app into a folder or turning off the home screen icon, if your phone allows it
Email alertsUse a separate email address that you do not share with family or work
Photo permissionsAllow access only to the photos you choose, and avoid giving location access when the app is not in use
Shared devices and accountsLog out, and check that app store purchases are not shared through a family account

Discretion features differ between services. OneNightFriend, for example, lists incognito search among its strengths according to the platform, but you should read what it hides and from whom before relying on it. The same applies to any privacy mode on any service.

Using more than one app, and leaving cleanly

Some people install several apps at once to widen the pool. That is allowed, but it multiplies the number of accounts, subscriptions and privacy settings you have to manage. A simple habit helps: keep a short note of which services you use, which email each one has and where each subscription is billed.

When you are done with an app, leave properly. Cancel any subscription in the right place, delete your account if you want your profile removed, and then uninstall the app. Check your bank statement a month later to confirm that nothing is still being charged. If you used a separate email address, keep it for a while in case you need to contact support.

Safety when you use a hook up app

Apps move quickly, which is useful but can encourage rushing. Slow down where it matters.

  • Do not send money, gift cards or crypto to someone you have not met.
  • Be cautious about moving to another messaging app straight away.
  • Check a person is real with a short live video call.
  • Think carefully before sharing private images or any details that identify you.
  • Agree what you both want, accept a no immediately and meet in public the first time.
  • Tell a friend your plans, arrange your own transport, and use protection. NHS sexual health services offer free and confidential advice.

Good to know

What to look for in a hook up app

If you prefer your phone, a few practical points separate a well-run service from a frustrating one. None of them require testing a service for weeks. Most can be read from the sign-up flow, the settings menu and the terms.

  • Clear pricing before payment. You should see the plan length, the total charge and the renewal terms before you confirm.
  • Obvious cancellation steps. The help centre should explain how to cancel for each payment method.
  • Reporting and blocking tools. You should be able to report a profile and block someone in a few taps.
  • Privacy settings you can understand. Look for control over who sees your profile and photos, and over what is shared with other members.
  • Honest permissions. An app should ask for what it needs, not for access to everything on your phone.

Data and permissions

Dating apps handle sensitive information, including your location and the fact that you use an adult service. Read the privacy policy for what is collected, how long it is kept and how to ask for your data to be deleted. In the UK you have rights over your personal data, and a reputable service tells you how to use them. Be selective with photo and location permissions, and remember that images you share with another person are outside the app's control once sent.

Before you download: a short checklist

  1. Decide whether you want an app or a website, using the table earlier on this page.
  2. Check the company name in the app store listing and on the website.
  3. Create a separate email address for the account.
  4. Turn off lock screen previews as soon as you install.
  5. Note the renewal date and set a reminder if you pay.

Who apps suit

Apps suit people who want to check messages quickly and who are comfortable managing notifications and permissions. Websites may suit people who want a longer profile, more search filters or no icon on the phone at all. Plenty of people use both, and you can change your mind at any point.

Finally, remember that you are always in control of the pace. If an app makes you feel hurried, flattered into paying or uneasy about what it collects, you can close it, switch off notifications or walk away. A good service accepts that, and a poor one usually shows its hand quickly by pushing harder.
